International student Min Diep Phan immerses herself in college and culture
From the kitchen of Sabai Thai to photography a the Devil’s Punchbowl on Lake Crescent, international student Min Diep Phan is making the most of her Peninsula College experience.
Originally from Hanoi, Vietnam, Min began her PC journey in the fall of 2014, and received her AA degree in June of 2017. Now enrolled in the Bachelor of Applied Science of Applied Management Program, she also works as a student ambassador and participates in the annual PC food drive.
In her role as an ambassador she works with campus recruiting, admissions, texts and calls students, and leads campus tours. Off the clock she enjoys hiking, photography, hanging out with friends and makeup artistry.
Over the past year she did her occupational training at Sabai Thai, a popular Port Angeles restaurant. She worked in the kitchen expediting orders, taking inventory, and cleaning. She said the skills she learned on the job will transfer nicely into the workplace.
“I learned about time management and leadership,” she said. “These are important skills that will benefit me in the future.”
In addition to her studies and volunteer projects, she interpreted calls for 911 emergency, hospitals, and the police, a role that she says can be stressful at times.
Min said instructors and staff are a big part of her success at PC, from helpful advice and conversations with Val Conroy and Nicole Casares in the international office, to classes with instructors Kate Reavey and Dan Underwood.
“Dr. Reavey is so down to earth and helpful,” she said. “She is easy to talk to, has very clear lectures, and is a really fun person.”
In the future Min sees herself pursuing her master’s degree while working in marketing and recruiting in a campus environment.
“Eventually I would like to be the head manager of a hotel or resort,” she said.
