As The Mariners get back on the diamond this season, one Peninsula College graduate is poised inside Seattle’s T-Mobile Park to tell the story of America’s greatest pastime through social media. Ryan Hueter, manager of baseball information, produces content for all seasons.
Like everyone, Hueter is adapting to work during COVID-19 chaos. Every day when he pulls up to the ballpark, his temperature is taken before he gets out of his car. He undergoes two COVID-19 tests a week, to make sure he and his coworkers are safe. The increased safety measures have done little to dampen his excitement for the game, or his job, which he prepared for as a journalism student at Peninsula College.
“The Buccaneer (student newspaper) was a milestone in my career,” Hueter said. “While working at The Buc, I developed skills that I have used throughout my professional career, such as writing, editing, design and photography. The Buc was my first exposure to journalism; it was an experience that serves me well to this day.”
Hueter, a Sequim native who worked as the paper’s 2011 sports editor, said The Buccaneer documents the history of PC, chronicling events big and small, and gives voice to the lifeblood of campus – the students and their achievements.
“The Buc provides an opportunity for PC students to develop new skills, an opportunity to be informed, and inform others, of the issues facing PC, its staff and its students and an opportunity to be a part of something bigger than themselves,” he said.
